The Catalyst for Change
Hate Free Outagamie was formed in May 2023 after Outagamie County Supervisor Tim Hermes repeatedly made dehumanizing transphobic remarks to disrupt public meetings. Local officials refused to intervene. Fed up with inaction, a group of local queer activists, allies, and community members mobilized, organizing a series of escalating direct actions; from protests to occupying county board meetings. Our sustained pressure forced the county board to finally censure Hermes.
This victory proved what’s possible when we organize, but we knew the work couldn’t stop there. Recognizing the need for a permanent, community-led force to defend queer and marginalized people across the Fox Valley, we formed Hate Free Outagamie as an independent, radical organizing body.
Leadership & Committees
Hate Free Outagamie operates under a collaborative organizing model with elected leadership and active committees. Decisions are made democratically, ensuring accountability, shared responsibility, and opportunities for all members to contribute. This structure empowers members to take initiative, strengthen community connections, and work collectively toward a safer, more inclusive Outagamie County.
Leadership at Hate Free Outagamie is shared among our Chair, Co-Chair, and Committee Chairs. With elections every six months, members have a regular chance to step up, lead, and keep our movement dynamic and inclusive.
